Mugabe claims African leaders support him

(UPI Photo/Ezio Petersen) HARARE, Zimbabwe, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Zimbabwean government claimed Wednesday President Robert Mugabe has support among African leaders who said they were misled by the opposition. Zimbabwe's state-controlled newspaper, the Herald, reported some Southern African Development Community leaders apologized to Mugabe for their condemnation of his election and accused Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai of lying to them about the political situation in Zimbabwe, reported The Nation, a newspaper in Nairobi, Kenya. African leaders condemned Mugabe's victory in the June 27 runoff election, in which he was the lone candidate following Tsvangirai's withdrawal.... [read full story]
